Ashton Park Getting Busy campaign launches

By clayts, May 14, 2010 10:42 am

It may seem as if nothing much has been happening with the group of late, but we have been busy behind the scenes preparing for the first stage of the transformation of Ashton Park into an exciting new community open space.

In partnership with Groundwork Greater Nottingham, we have submitted a bid for funding to provide new play equipment aimed at  8 to 13 year old children, who currently have little in the way of entertainment available to them on the park.

This will launch our new Ashton Park Getting Busy campaign, which aims to encourage the local community to start enjoying their open space. The long-term plan will include the potential for a community garden, and to improve integration with Snape Wood Nature Reserve. We also intend to host a Summer event for the whole community, as well as put into place basketball training.

As part of the funding bid we shall be engaging with local children and the community as a whole to see what type of play equipment they would like.

This is an exciting time for Snape Wood and Ashton Park – watch this space !

Meeting postponed until New Year

By clayts, December 17, 2009 12:50 pm

Tonight’s meeting of the Friends group has been postponed until the New Year, mainly because most of our key stakeholders are unable to attend, but also to guard against any travelling problems which may potentially result from the heavy snow which is forecast to fall in Nottingham.

A revised date will be announced in the New Year.

Great news for the future of Snape Wood

By clayts, October 2, 2009 12:53 pm

We’re pleased to report that our bid for funding to take the first steps to integrate Snape Wood Nature Reserve and Ashton Park into one recreational area was successful.

We succesfully applied for £2,300 funding to the Area One Ward Members’ Budget Allocations (Cllrs Heppell, Hartshorne and Klein)  which, together with the £700 which the Friends group shall contribute, will allow our partners at Groundwork Greater Nottingham to start the ball rolling with consultation with the community and key stakeholders, to draw up sketch proposals and to commence the pursuit for funding to pay for the development work.

The Friends group thank the Committee for their support, and to Groundwork for agreeing to take on the project. It bodes well for a bright future for the area.

Nottingham City Council are running a Green Market in Bulwell Market Place on Monday 20 July from 10am until 4pm, as part of the Week of Action in Bulwell.

Bulwell Week of Action

Bulwell Week of Action

Representatives from a number of local organisations, including our partners at Groundwork Greater Nottingham and Bulwell Interim Local Area Partnership (formerly Bulwell Vision) will be in attendance and will be displaying material about Snape Wood and Ashton Park on our behalf.

As well as the facility to swap plants with other local residents, visitors can get their dogs or cats microchipped for a reduced rate by the RSPCA (highly recommended – it helps pet escapees find their owners again very quickly !) and their bicycles security marked. There will also be stalls from a number of local organisations, including Notts Wildlife Trust.

What do you think about Ashton Park and Snape Wood ?

By clayts, July 1, 2009 4:17 pm

Snape Wood residents may want to consider adding their thoughts about the current condition of Ashton Park and Snape Wood Nature Reserve by visiting GreenSTAT, a website which asks a series of questions about parks and open spaces around the country, and which are fed back to the local authority, Nottingham City Council.

Not only does this provide valuable information about how the community feels about the sites now, but more importantly it also serves as a helpful benchmark for us to measure against once we start carrying out more maintenance and improvements to each site.

Your input is appreciated – please do express your opinions honestly.

Exciting future for Snape Wood and Ashton Park

By clayts, June 26, 2009 10:35 pm

Following the second meeting of the Friends of SWAP yesterday, we are pleased to announce that we have agreed to go into partnership with Groundwork Greater Nottingham to plan the future for both Ashton Park and Snape Wood Nature Reserve in the years ahead.

Groundwork Greater Nottingham - our new partners

Groundwork Greater Nottingham - our new partners

We have a very ambitious vision for the sites, the main objective being to make the green space occupied by the Park and the Reserve more ‘joined up’. This could include the creation of more formal entrances to the sites, the removal of the fencing which currently divides the two, and a possible small expansion of the area they cover, without impacting upon the neighbouring housing.

Consideration is being given to making formal recreation the focus for the Park  (e.g. younger childrens play area, basketball coaching, possible inclusion of a small football pitch, picnic benches, more bins, a community garden),  whilst the emphasis for the Nature Reserve could become more informal recreation, education, training and conservation, with the adoption of a formal plan to actively manage this valuable and ancient woodland, once a working coppice wood.

The first step is to create a development plan, something we will be working closely with Groundwork over the coming months to produce. Clearly there is a very long way to go, and none of these intended improvements can be made without first seeking the views of the community and those who use both sites. This may include the creation of a 3D model of the proposals, to allow those who want to contribute to the future to see for themselves what the plans could entail, and to voice their opinions.

There are exciting times ahead, not just for those involved in the Friends group, but for the Snape Wood community as a whole. To be kept informed of developments please do become a member – it is totally free to join.
